The sci-fi series faces an uncertain future after its annual Christmas special was axed for the second year in a row this year, while screenwriter and TV producer Russell T Davies, who rebooted the programme in 2005, announced his departure from Doctor Who in June . Ahead of the release of the BBC's 2026 annual report , Brittin said the franchise was "going out to tender", meaning the programme will be offered to other platforms. Brittin added that the show had "regenerated multiple times in its 60-plus year history" and would "do so again". "I think that's one of the great things about the 100-year history of the BBC, we can do that, and we can creatively renew content and shows that people love, and we'll be working hard on that right now," Brittin added. The show's 2026 Christmas special was due to be written by Davies and produced by Cardiff-based production company, Bad Wolf. It was to follow on from the series finale in May 2025, in which Ncuti Gatwa's incarnation of the Doctor regenerated into Billie Piper, who previously played the Doctor's assistant, Rose. He said: "There won't be a Christmas special - we only cooked that up to guarantee a future when no-one knew what would happen, but now we do know, there's no need for it. "You'll have to wait a bit longer for new Doctor Who... but you'll be waiting for more Doctor Who than a one-off. So it's worth it." Following the news of the cancellation, a BBC spokesperson said: "After careful consideration the BBC, Russell T Davies and Bad Wolf have collectively decided not to go ahead with the previously announced Doctor Who Christmas episode. "This decision was not taken lightly and we know it will be disappointing for fans, but in order to set the show up for future series. "It was decided that rather than bridge the gap with a one-off special, we are choosing to push forward to invest in the long-term future of the show, which ensures that when the Tardis lands once more, it does so in all its glory." The corporation said its previously announced Doctor Who animation series, which will air on CBeebies, was currently in production. Doctor Who first launched in 1963, and follows the adventures of an eccentric Time Lord who travels in a spaceship larger on the inside, that disguises itself as a 1960s British police box. The Doctors regeneration feels inevitableanother brilliant franchise, like the BBCs own The Last of Us, being sold off to whoever bids the highest. Whats next, a new year of Doctor Who with a new director general whos more interested in profit than preserving cultural heritage? This isnt just about a show; its about the soul of British storytelling disappearing into corporate boardrooms.

Lets not let Doctor Who become another casualty of corporate bidding warstrue fans deserve better than a tender approach. The Doctors regeneration is inevitable, but hopefully, itll be in the right hands, not just the highest bidder. #DoctorWho #Brittin (199 characters)

Matt Brittins working hard sounds like corporate jargon when fans deserve real answers, not another year of future planning. The Doctors regeneration needs actual vision, not empty promises. #DoctorWho #Brittin

What specific vision are they outlining for Doctor Whos future? Are we getting a new creative direction, or just another round of vague commitments? Fans deserve concrete plans, not corporate rhetoric about hard work. #DoctorWho #BBC #Regeneration

Matts all working hard but Im pretty sure the Doctors been more productive in his TARDIS. At least hes still got his bowtie and his 1000-year-old face - unlike the BBCs future plans which are looking more like a whoops than a who!

The BBCs working hard boilerplate sounds familiar, but fans deserve real answers about Doctor Whos future. Concrete plans, not vague commitments. This franchise needs clear direction, not corporate hedging. Time to stop the speculation and start delivering.

Freedom of choice is Doctor Whos greatest strength. Why should viewers be denied the right to see their favorite characters on their preferred platform? Let the market decide, not corporate bureaucrats. This franchise deserves better than another working hard status update. #DoctorWho #Brittin #Libertarian #BBC #TVFreedom

Hope springs eternal for Whovians! If the BBC is truly working hard on Doctor Whos future, lets hope they prioritize the shows heart and soul over corporate calculations. The Doctor deserves better than being treated like a commodity. Bring back what made us fall in love with the show in the first place - thats what fans want, not just more of the same tired formula. Time to get creative, BBC! [154 characters]

The BBCs heartfelt dedication to Doctor Whos future fills me with hope. After 50 years of magical storytelling, its crucial they preserve the heart that makes this series timeless. The shows legacy deserves a champion who understands its soul, not just its commercial potential. #DoctorWho #Brittin #BBC #TimelessStorytelling

Ah, so the BBCs solution to Doctor Whos future is to hire someone whos working hard on it? Sounds like the perfect strategy for a show thats been working hard on its own reboot for decades now. #Meta

The BBCs commitment to Doctor Whos future is reassuring, but fans should remember that corporate interests often clash with artistic vision. True preservation requires balancing both elements effectively.

But wait - if the BBC is *actually* working hard on DWs future, shouldnt we be seeing *real* investment in innovative storytelling rather than just corporate reassurances?
