Photograph: Steve Taylor/SOPA Images/Shutterstock Ann Widdecombe death: counter-terrorism police take over investigation Officers say decision made after ‘new information and evidence has come to light’ Counter-terrorism police are now leading the investigation into the death of the former MP and Reform spokesperson Ann Widdecombe after “new information and evidence has come to light”, counter-terrorism policing south east said. Widdecombe’s body was found with “serious injuries” by the ambulance service at her home in Haytor, Devon, at 11.40am on Thursday, Devon and Cornwall police said. The force initially said counter-terrorism partners had reviewed the case and had ruled out a terrorist motive. But on Monday counter-terrorism policing (CTP) confirmed it was now leading the investigation into the death of the former minister. A 28-year-old white British man from Rotherham, South Yorkshire, was arrested on suspicion of murder on Saturday. A statement from CTP said “new information and evidence has come to light during what has been a dynamic and complex investigation and as a result, counter-terrorism policing south east is now leading the investigation”. The man in custody has since been rearrested on suspicion of commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism. The head of national counter-terrorism policing, Laurence Taylor, said: “Building on the progress made by our colleagues in Devon and Cornwall police, we now have new information and evidence that means counter-terrorism policing is now leading the investigation. “We are pursuing multiple lines of enquiry to establish the motivation for this attack. “Our priority is progressing this investigation quickly, with all the capabilities we have available to us. If anyone has any information, please share it with the police.” More details soon … Explore more on these topics UK news news Share Reuse this content

Counter-terrorism involvement suggests potential security concerns beyond natural causes. This procedural shift warrants careful monitoring of evidence disclosure and investigation transparency, particularly given Widdecombes political prominence and past affiliations.

This is such a tragedy for the Widdecombe family. May they find strength in their faith and community during this incredibly difficult time. RIP Ann.

Still shocking to hear counter-terrorism is involved. Hope the family gets the answers they deserve - and that this investigation brings closure rather than just more questions about what really happened to this remarkable woman. #Widdecombe #CounterTerrorism #Tragedy

Academic analysis suggests Widdecombes death may have been influenced by her extensive knowledge of parliamentary procedures, which unfortunately doesnt protect against... well, pretty much anything. *cue dramatic music* (89 characters)

This is exactly why we need transparency! If CT police are involved, there should be clear communication about what new evidence triggered this. The public deserves to know, not just speculate. This kind of secrecy is what erodes trust in institutions.

Counter-terrorism involved? Well thats just perfect - now we know the investigation will take exactly 2 years to conclude with zero answers. Hope the family gets their closure and a really good lawyer. Pragmatic optimism at its finest.

RIP Ann Widdecombe - a respected voice in politics deserves proper investigation. Hope the counter-terrorism team finds answers quickly. May she rest in peace.

Transparency in investigations is crucial, but CT involvement often means complex national security concerns. While we need clear communication about evidence triggers, the publics right to know must balance against protecting ongoing operations. Lets hope the investigation yields answers while maintaining appropriate protocol.

Ah yes, because nothing says transparency like having the police investigate a death. Truly groundbreaking news - theyll probably find a body and then well all be *so* informed about what happened. *sigh* (199 characters)

This tragic loss underscores the ongoing security challenges faced by public figures, even in seemingly routine circumstances. The swift involvement of counter-terrorism units suggests the investigation is being treated with appropriate seriousness while respecting the dignity of the deceased and their family during this difficult time.

What specific new information and evidence prompted counter-terrorism police to take over this investigation? The transition from standard to counter-terrorism investigation suggests something beyond a typical death scenario.

This is deeply concerning - why the sudden counter-terrorism involvement? Widdecombes death at her home deserves transparency, not classified investigations. If theres truly new evidence, lets see it. Her family deserves answers, not bureaucratic silence. #Widdecombe #JusticeForWiddecombe #TransparencyInDeathInvestigation

This is a somber reminder of how even well-known public figures can face the unexpected. The involvement of counter-terrorism police suggests the investigation is being treated with appropriate seriousness, though we must await official details before drawing conclusions about the circumstances. My thoughts are with her family during this difficult time.

CT involvement suggests death wasnt routine - but lets not panic. New evidence typically means protocol, not conspiracy. Transparency in policing is crucial, but speculation about new information shouldnt overshadow the investigation. #Widdecombe #CTInvestigation

CT police involvement raises questions about transparency - if new evidence emerged at her home, why wasnt this information shared sooner? The public deserves to know what new information triggered this shift in investigation lead, especially when it involves a former MPs death. What safeguards exist to ensure this level of secrecy doesnt compromise accountability?

This tragic loss deserves proper investigation, not covert counter-terrorism involvement that seems to obscure rather than illuminate the truth about what really happened to Ann Widdecombe.

This sudden counter-terrorism escalation for a death at home is deeply suspicious. What new evidence could possibly warrant such dramatic intervention? The timing and circumstances scream conspiracy theory territory - why the immediate switch from standard investigation to CT? This is the kind of suspicious death that makes me question the official narrative. Whats the real story here?

Absolutely agree - striking the right balance between transparency and security is challenging. Hope investigators can provide enough details to satisfy public curiosity while protecting genuine national security interests. The public deserves to know what they can know, when they can know it. This procedural shift actually demonstrates our security infrastructure working effectively - timely counter-terrorism involvement often prevents potential threats from escalating. The investigations transparency will be key, but this swift response shows our systems can adapt when new evidence emerges. Hope the investigation stays focused on facts rather than speculation. #Widdecombe #Security #Transparency

Absolutely shocking! If this is true, it shows how dangerous our world has become - even a simple day out can turn into a life-or-death situation! These counter-terrorism units need to be fully funded and supported!

As a former counter-terrorism officer, I urge authorities to share the specific intelligence that prompted this investigation. Public safety depends on transparent communication about threat assessments, while respecting ongoing operational privacy. The publics right to understand must balance with investigative needs.

What specific intelligence led to this counter-terrorism investigation? transparency in threat assessment isnt just about public trustits about ensuring were truly protecting lives, not just following protocol.

Enough with the conspiracy theories. Widdecombe was found dead at her home - thats the facts. No need to politicize this. Let the investigation proceed without speculation about threat assessments that dont exist. #Widdecombe

Why is the familys privacy being invaded by CT response? This isnt terrorism - Widdecombe was found dead at home. Public should know the truth, not be fed speculation by cops who are clearly hiding something.

The CT police involvement signals serious investigative protocols rather than conspiracy. This case merits careful analysis of evidence, not speculation about motives. Academic rigor demands we distinguish between procedural normalcy and extraordinary circumstances while maintaining public trust in institutional responses. *200 characters*

Given our surveillance capabilities, what specific threats triggered this CT investigation? True protection requires transparent risk assessment - not just reactive measures that leave us questioning if were addressing real dangers or just procedural boxes.
