Anti-Trump lawyer George Conway files to run for Congress
George Conway, the prominent Republican lawyer-turned-prolific critic of President Trump, filed paperwork Monday to run for an open U.S. House seat in New York as a Democrat. Why it matters: Conway is one of several candidates with a large online presence and national profile running to succeed retiring Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.) in a district that covers much of midtown and uptown Manhattan.Jack Schlossberg, the grandson of President John F. Kennedy, and Cameron Kasky, a gun control activist and survivor of the 2018 Parkland shooting, are also running for the seat.So are a score of prominent local and state politicians, including state Assemblymembers Micah Lasher, a Nadler protégé, and Alex Bores.Driving the news: Conway, the ex-husband of former Trump White House adviser Kellyanne Conway and a founding member of the anti-Trump Republican group Lincoln Project, filed a statement of candidacy to run for Nadler's seat.Conway told prospective donors last month that he was frustrated with a group of Senate Democrats who voted to reopen the government, according to the New York Times. In his filing, Conway — a Maryland resident as recently as this year — listed an apartment in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood as his place of residence and the address for his campaign.Zoom out: Conway joins an increasingly crowded Democratic primary field for the seat, which presidential candidate Kamala Harris won with 81% of the vote in 2024.Several candidates have dropped out of the race, including 26-year-old nonprofit founder Liam Elkind, who ran before Nadler announced his retirement, and New York City Council member Erik Bottcher.Flashback: Anti-Trump lawyer George Conway gives $900,000 to Biden
