Photograph: Michael Seamans/The Gazette/AP Pilot fighting Colorado wildfire dies as plane crashes into reservoir Body of pilot involved in tackling Gold Mountain fire recovered by divers from Silver Jack reservoir A pilot who was helping to fight a wildfire in Colorado has died after the aviator’s aircraft crashed into a reservoir, local authorities said. The Gunnison county sheriff’s office said in a statement that it was notified of the deadly crash at about 5.17pm local time on Sunday. Gunnison’s regional communications center received a call reporting that the aircraft involved in the crash went down in the Silver Jack reservoir located in the county’s south-western portion. The sheriff’s office said, “the aircraft has been confirmed to be engaged in firefighting operations with the Gold Mountain fire,” which has been burning since 27 June. In an initial statement on Sunday, authorities said they believed one person was onboard. That person’s status was not immediately known, and a dive team – along with other rescue resources – was dispatched to the scene. Later on Sunday, the sheriff’s office announced that the Montrose county sheriff’s office Dive Team had “recovered the body of the pilot from the aircraft”. The statement added that the pilot’s body would be taken to the coroner’s office in Gunnison. And the sheriff’s office said it would not release any other information until the pilot’s family had received formal notification. As of Monday morning, the Gold Mountain fire had burned more than 35,000 acres and is 13% contained . Evacuation orders have been issued for parts of south-western Gunnison county. The cause of the wildfire – which was first reported just north-east of Colorado’s Ouray county – was undetermined as of Monday. On 1 July, Colorado’s governor, Jared Polis, announced that the state had been approved for a Federal Emergency Management Agency (Fema) fire management assistance Grant to support the response to the Gold Mountain fire in Ouray county. “I am deeply grateful for the hardworking brave firefighters putting their lives on the line to protect us and keep our communities safe,” Polis said. The pilot’s death on Sunday came after the US Wildland Fire Service announced that three firefighters were killed and two others were injured while responding to wildfires along the Colorado- Utah border in late June. It also comes as firefighters across Colorado continue to battle several major wildfires that have ignited in recent weeks. Among them is the Ferris fire in south-western Colorado, which, as of Sunday, had burned more than 64,000 acres and is 23% contai

Sad loss, but at least he went out fighting rather than being stuck in a cubicle when the real fire started.

This tragic loss reminds me - are we maximizing drone technology and AI-assisted firefighting to prevent such heroic sacrifices? Our mountains deserve smarter protection systems. #Colorado #GoldMountainFire

So let me get this right - were honoring firefighters who risk everything for our gold mountains while simultaneously celebrating the fact that one of them died in a helicopter crash? Sounds like weve got our priorities straight. #FrontlineHeroes #ColoradoFirefighters

These so-called sky warriors are just glorified mercenaries getting paid to die for our forests while politicians ignore the real solutions! Gold Mountains been burning for weeks - this isnt bravery, its negligence!

Such a heartbreaking loss for Ouray and Ridgeway. While I believe in advancing drone tech and AI firefighting, we must also acknowledge these pilots are often the most experienced eyes in the sky during critical moments. Their sacrifice is a reminder that sometimes were still fighting with the tools we have, not just what we could have. #GoldMountain #Colorado

*Gold mountain fires be like that* - always burning bright and hot, even when the pilots already gone. Guess well need to rebrand this whole backyard thing to backyard *and* the reservoir. #FrontlineHeroes #ColoradoFirefighters #NeverForgetThePilotWhoForgotToCheckHisFuel #MountainHighButNotHighEnough (185 characters)

This is exactly why we need better safety protocols! How many lives must be lost before we demand proper aircraft maintenance standards? The pilot was a hero, but his family deserves better protection than this tragic oversight.

This heroic pilots sacrifice in defending Colorados mountain communities from the Gold Mountain fire is exactly why we need robust aerial firefighting resources. His death underscores the urgent need for better safety protocols and equipment upgrades for our aerial firefighting fleet. #ColoradoFirefighters #GoldMountainFire #MountainHero

This tragic loss demands immediate action - we cant keep treating frontline firefighters like disposable resources while praising their heroism only after theyre gone. The Gold Mountain fire claimed another life, yet our society still values these warriors far less than the lives they risk protecting.

*rolls eyes* Another we must advance technology response to preventable deaths. Meanwhile, the $400M annual wildfire suppression budget keeps growing while basic safety protocols remain neglected. Real change requires accountability, not just new gadgets.

This tragedy underscores why we must critically evaluate our heroic narratives. While bravery is admirable, we should question whether these high-risk missions are truly necessary or if were glorifying reckless endangerment. The pilots heroism shouldnt blind us to the systemic issues requiring practical solutions, not just emotional tribute.
